SLPP Dallas Texas Has New Chairman

Dallas, USA, August 5, 2015 –  It was a new day, August 1st as the outgoing Chairlady, Ms. Kadie Tejan-Sie of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) Dallas chapter in Texas, passed over the instrument of power to who every member of that organization believe is the youngest leader since the inception of the SLPP branch in the United States.

The person perceiving an overwhelming victory in the elections in April this year was Mr. Donald Kopoi (in photo). He all but utterly eliminated the main opponent Mr. Solomon Pieh.  Mr. Pieh was the founder and first Chairman of the chapter.  Mr. Kopoi’s victory was due to the mobilization and movement the youths called themselves, ‘Young Generation”  headed by Mr. Joseph Macarthy.

As a matter of principle and party culture, Mr. Donald Kopoi was formerly inaugurated in Dallas to assume the office as fourth Chairman of the chapter on August 1st, 2015. He won the elections in a landslide victory. The main contender, Mr. Solomon Pieh succumbed to the elections inauspiciously according to voters.  Mr. Pieh did not present at the inauguration, but according to the Chairman’s speach, he was absent due to circumstances beyond his control.

Lawyer Andrew J. Kaikai, the keynote speaker, administered the inaugural ceremony. The president elect took an oath of affirmation along with his young generation executive before a crowd of people including a high powered delegate of the All People’s Congress Social and Cultural group (APC/SC).  The inaugural ceremony was not clear whether it was the branch constitution protocol, but many believe it was just a traditional procedure for the chapter chairman to do a swearing in ceremony.

Most interestingly, the outgoing Chairlady was sworn-in with her male vice, Mr. Amadu Chernor Barrie some two years ago. This time, the new Chairman, Mr. Korpoi took the oath of office with his charismatic pretty young vice chair, Ms. Jestina Momoh. This kind of democracy displayed by the chapter demonstrated gender equality in the Sierra Leone community in Texas.

In his inaugural speech, the new chapter chairman vows strong unity in his local chapter as well as the national level at the SLPP North America branch. He urged the party members in the community to help him build up the chapter and put the past behind them. He added that the SLPP local chapters and the entire membership in the National divided by conflict cannot sustain a lasting peace if all failed to work for the common good of the party. Therefore, I assumed power with a determination to break the circle of petty conflicts, Chairman Kopoi reaffirmed.

Mr. Donald Korpoi went on to say that even though to engage in a political intrigue one has to take cognizance of the underlying issues, but it is also indisputable to build a financial strength that will convince many people to enter into the fray of politics. Therefore, I am going to embark on a serious fundraiser drive to ensure that my chapter thrives well financially to accelerate the effort of challenging the next coming presidential and Parliamentary elections.

Mr. Donald Kopoi ended his inaugural address by making promise that he will endeavor as best he can to carry on the position of SLPP Dallas chapter in such a manner that the confidence reposed in him by the membership will be justified.

The new president of SLPP Dallas has a Master’s degree in information system and is a member of Sierra Stars Soccer Association (SSSA). Sierra Stars boss, Mr. Patrick Dangawalli conferred on Mr. Kopoi a plaque honoring him for his new challenging position as Chairman of SLPP in Texas.

The keynote speaker, lawyer Andrew Kaikai, reminded attendees, not limited to SLPP fans, but the Sierra Leone community as whole to reflect on the difficulties our people is experiencing back home. He said, Sierra Leoneans should not allow to be influenced by negative attitudes of our political parties. It doesn’t matter whether you are in favor of the green color party or the red-sun party, but we have the obligations to keep the peace with our various rivals in politics and avoid implications by politicians.

Lawyer Kaikai, who is also a legal adviser for SLPP/NA, commended the young generation who build up this chapter to effect a change. He said that youth are the back bone to our nation that can change the future of a society with their well being and courageous behavior. They are here in our community to show us that which we have not been willing to look at within ourselves. Therefore, it is a mistake on anyone disregarding the youth role in a society.

The keynote speaker, not having enough time to speak, advise the entire SLPP North America and all across the world to put aside all grievances and try to build up a strong force that will easily defeat the All People’s Congress (APC) party in the forth coming elections. It is time for all members of the party to come together and speak one voice. It is also a high time that we stopped fighting amongst ourselves and started to truly work together for the good of the party, Lawyer Kaikai applauded.

Almost every speaker in the inaugural ceremony of Mr. Donald Kopoi spoke on the importance of dwelling together in unity. Sierra Leoneans should develop a sense of sameness as nation, a connectedness to our cultural values, and a commonality with one another while in the Diaspora. The inauguration feast continues on the following day, August 2nd in a well-attended picnic.
