Airtel Sierra Leone’s Managing Director, Sudipto Chowdhury, has revealed that, in terms of subscribers, Airtel is the third largest mobile service provider in the world with over 303 million subscribers across its operations in 20 countries in Africa and Asia.

He made the disclosure during a recent joint briefing with the Chairman of the National Telecommunications Commission (NATCOM), Momoh Konte, in the presence of the Country Heads of Ericsson and Huawei.

Sudipto Chowdhury noted that, in Sierra Leone, Airtel has the largest geographical coverage with a presence in all the fourteen districts and over 1,000 towns and villages.

“We are collaborating closely with government to expand our geographical coverage with a wider 3G data network backed with a state-of-the-art data center and a modernized switch. This will be complemented by a combined partner ECO system of Ericsson and Huawei,” he further disclosed, continuing that they are strengthening their partnerships as Huawei will be responsible for their day-to-day operations of the network using a model with strong local presence to improve response times.

“Ericsson will continue to supply and install our new radio and transmission equipment for both 2G and 3G sites,” Mr. Chowdhury further explained.

He added that Huawei will supply and install their core network equipment as well as their optical fiber network.

Alongside this, he went on, Airtel will manage the passive network through local contractors as well as coordinate their partners to ensure the customer experience.

The Managing Director reiterated Airtel’s commitment to continue providing in Sierra Leone best in class quality network benchmarked with international standard, pointing out that the company has made significant investments in Sierra Leone and remains committed to continue whilst offering direct and indirect employment opportunities.

NATCOM Chairman re-echoed that one of the key responsibilities of NATCOM is to ensure a good quality mobile service experience benchmarked with international standards for the citizens of Sierra Leone. NATCOM, he went on, has undergone several deliberations with the operators and has reviewed their network expansion and improvement plans.
