Port Loko ready to give final push to Ebola

Port Loko, July 7 (SLENA) – Parliament for Constituency 052 in the Port Loko district, Hon. Ibrahim Bundu who is also the Leader of the Majority Party in Parliament, has said they were ready to come back and give a final push to end Ebola in the District. He said the Members of Parliament from the district and other stakeholders have resolved not to succumb to any form of castigations levied on them, but will rather continue to concertedly work for the total eradication of the Ebola virus from their home district. The Leader of Government Business in parliament made the statement at the monthly Port Loko District Leadership meeting organised by the District Ebola Response Centre (DERC).

Addressing Paramount Chiefs, Ward Councillors and other key stakeholders in the Ebola fight, he said they must resist all forms of distraction and remain focus to the course of redeeming the image of their district that has so much been dented in recent times.

Hon. Ibrahim Bundu used the opportunity to outline the series of interventions the district MPs have done in preventing the spread of the disease in the district including sensitisation and other forms of community engagements. He said this was not only to complement the efforts of government but to as well help people to see the need of owning and championing the fight. He cited the two week long Simulcast that was done for the six radio stations in the district and how it immensely enhanced the subsequent 31 days of no Ebola new case recorded

Hon. Ibrahim Bundu said the much talked about setback came few weeks ago, when an Ebola positive woman was transported from Mannie Curve in the Kambia District to Water Street in Kaffu Bullom where she died of the virus. He said it was never their wish, noting that they have since been badly sadden by this unfortunate incident.

The Leader of the majority in parliament said the issue has been grossly painted and misrepresented by dissenters as if it was a deliberate act done in consonant with the people of Port Loko District. He said that should in no way distract them largely because Port Loko has a lot of features which are being highly envied by ill-thinking or narrow minded persons.

Earlier in his welcome address, the host Paramount Chief, Alikali Malla 11 of Maforki Chiefdom said there was need for them to work as a team and redeem the image of their district than ever before.

His version was shared by the Paramount Chief of Kaffu Bullom Chiefdom, Bai Shebora Sergba Gberren who spoke of the fruitless efforts so far done to combat the spread of the virus in his chiefdom. The Paramount Chief said he was optimistic that the battle will soon be a thing of the past now that every other person was getting actively involved.

Apart from the Deputy Chairman of Local Council, Councillor I.S Bangura who is also the Chairman of the Taskforce on Ebola, and the Senior District Officer, Abdulai Mansaray who urged for a continuous engagement with the locals to end the spread of the disease, Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the North/ Western Region, F U K Daboh, disclosed that there was an apparent stalemate between the commercial motor bike riders and the police. He further disclosed the recent deployment of additional personnel to ensure law and order in the region.
