SLPP: One Country, Divided People

Main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) has been going in the opposite direction of what its motto, “One Country, One People” symbolizes, unity. Instead of maintaining the unity for which its motto stands, the party’s top members are almost always drawing daggers, a situation that keeps tearing apart the party.

SLPP’s persistent disunity and consequent gradual weakness is not good for this country’s young democracy which needs a united and strong opposition to grow well. Opposition is one of the pillars on which democracy rests. A democracy without opposition is meaningless. So, our main opposition SLPP must be reminded that it has a key role to play in the country’s democratic process but, obviously, it cannot play well its role if it continues to be in disunity. The more disunited and weakened the SLPP becomes, the higher becomes the possibility for this country to go back to mono-party system.

Parrot the democratic bird is very worried over the persistent palavers plaguing our main opposition party. The big bird keeps wondering whether it is not very ironical for a party bearing the motto, “One Country, One People”, to be having members perpetually quarreling among themselves. Are they one people? Of course no, they are widely divided people. Hence, the erudite Professor Parrot is humbly submitting that the party must change its motto from “One Country, One People” to “One Country, Divided People” to match its current state of disarray.

But if the SLPP cannot solve its own internal problems, how is the party going to solve the chronic problems of Sierra Leone? This is the million Dollar question that keeps tormenting Parrot’s political thoughts. The SLPP should now be devising strategies how to gather the North-Western votes of which the party is in dire need to bounce back to power, and not always running to the courts and the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC) which appears to be becoming fed up with the party’s seemingly endless conflicts.
