The 27-year-old was also fined an undisclosed amount for failing to show up for Sunday’s league match against PSV Eindhoven.

“Kargbo has been sent to the second team for the rest of the season because of indiscipline,” Rufus Roel, the Willem II spokesman told BBC Sport.

“We have also fined him for his actions but we will not say to the public the amount involved.

“Kargbo had some explanation for his conduct but it has not been accepted by the club therefore he will fully serve the punishment.

“There is no chance that the club will overturn the decision because we want to send a strong message to Kargbo about his conduct.”

Meanwhile, the midfielder’s agent has lashed out at the decision to drop his player to the second team, insisting Kargbo is innocent.

“The club has made it look like Ibrahim intentionally absented himself from the team but that’s nonsense,” Ger Lagerdijk said.

“Ibrahim did not know what the arrangement was for the pre-match was and the decent thing could have been done by informing him.

“Also days before the match against PSV, Ibrahim had been nursing an injury to be fit for the game but it did not heal and he was not ready.”

Willem II were defeated 1-0 in the home game, a result which leaves them just one place above bottom side RKC Waalwijk with four matches remaining.

This is not the first time Kargbo has been dropped to the second team because of disciplinary reasons.

Earlier this year he was axed after returning late from a holiday in his home country without permission.
