Sierra Leone Public Health Doctor honoured by ASPEN Institute Fellowship

Aspen Institute, based in Washington DC in the USA is supported by the Melinda Gates Foundation and offers fellowship to development experts from Africa and other developing countries around the world. Fellows are drawn from a variety of development disciplines, ranging from public health and education to poverty alleviation, agriculture, and sanitation and community activism. The selected fellows are experts in their fields who have a deep understanding of broad development challenges and a passion for communicating their views.  (Photo: Dr Samuel A S Kargbo (MD,MPH,DMed-Leeds University, UK)

The fellowship offers a year-long program media support, training, research and writing under the guidance of experienced mentors and trainers. The aim of the Aspen institute fellowship is to help Fellows to sharpen their messages, elevate their stories, focus their media targets, and communicate their insights across a variety of media platforms – illuminating crucial grassroots perspectives for a broad worldwide audience.

The nomination to become an Aspen Institute Fellowship is very keen from a global platform, and for every year, only 12 fellows are selected.

The tiny country of Sierra Leone has produced an enviable Global Health Leader whose performance and innovative stories in the field of public health have resonated far beyond the borders of Sierra Leone. Dr SAS Kargbo, a very moderate and larger-than-self personality is putting Sierra Leone on the Global Health map. In 2013, Dr SAS Kargbo was awarded a Doctor of Medicine degree by the prestigious Leeds University in the UK in recognition of his pro-poor innovations in improving maternal and newborn health and health system development in his 20 years professional practice.

The erudite doctor has been selected as one of the 12 Aspen Institute Fellows for 2015. In his offer letter the Director of Aspen Institute-Andrew Quinn stated: “I’m happy to let you know that you have been selected as an Aspen New Voices Fellow for 2015. It was an extremely competitive field, but your impressive work and strong message stood out. We’re thrilled to welcome you to the program!”

Dr SAS Kargbo in a brief chat promised to exploit the opportunity to develop himself very much from this fellowship, as well as using it to voice the health concerns of the people of Sierra Leone at international global health fora.

Dr SAS Kargbo was the Director of Reproductive & Child Health; and was appointed few weeks ago to head the Directorate of Health System Planning, Policy & Information in the Ministry of Health & Sanitation.
