Emergency Ebola Education for health science students and lecturers

A visiting professor of Medicine from the University of Rome Tor Vergata in Italy Vittorio Colizzi is in Sierra Leone on an “Emergency in Education” to respond to the Ebola Virus Disease for medical and health science students and lecturers of the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences University of Sierra Leone which was held yesterday at the Radiology Department Connaught Hospital in Freetown.  Left-Director of PaRD-SL Mahmoud Kargbo,  Professor  Vittorio Colizzi from the University of Rome Tor Vergata in Italy

The disease which has infected and claimed the lives of thousands of people in Sierra Leone Guinea and Liberia has no cure, but can be treated.

The disease is becoming not only a medical problem but also an education emergency. The perception of the disease by the public requires great adjustment, and that can be due by appropriate information/ communication and educational actions.

The professor warns that innovative measures should be explored for the treatment of Ebola patients as the virus is spreading like wild life.

He said there are no specific treatment for EVD and that the only treatment available is supporting therapy.

He stated that “we can end Ebola only with innovative measures on treatment and cure”

He also called for the political will to support health professionals with the resources to enable them research on vaccine.

Professor Vittorio Colizzi said “we need a different approach towards the fight against Ebola” he suggested.

He added that the development of technology should also be implored for treatment.

Giving a background of the Ebola virus he said since the outbreak in 1976 there has been no specific cure for the Ebola Virus

He said concerted efforts are needed to combat the virus.

During his power point presentation Professor Vittorio Colizzi explained about Ebola Viral Aetiology and natural reservoir and Transmission, Ebola pathogenesis, Ebola diagnosis, clinical syndrome and therapy.

He also discussed with the students and lecturers about epidemiology and Ebola outbreak history, social and education perception of Ebola virus and its impact on the African society.

The objective of the discussion is to inform and educate the students and lecturers at the University of Sierra Leone to understand the scientific and medical aspects linked to this infection and the need for a cooperative organisational reaction at the political, health and civil community level.

The visit of the professor was facilitated by the University of Rome Tor Vergata MERCK, UNESCO and Partners in Relief Development Sierra Leone a local NGO in the country.

The Director of PaRD-SL Mahmoud Kargbo and Dr. Sheku S Dumbuya Deen Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of Sierra Leone welcomed the professor and encouraged students and lecturers to make good use of the knowledge gained.

The University of Rome Tor Vergata in Italy and the Merck Capacity Advancement Programme have launched a joint initiative to medical and health sciences at the University of Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia.
