Senior level speakers from mining houses will gather to discuss the most pressing security concerns affecting the sector across the globe. Terrorism, the Ebola pandemic, fractured labour relations, theft of equipment and valuable minerals from mines, illegal mining, work place violence and community engagement challenges will be some of the topics covered at this forum next week.

Amongst companies confirmed to attend are: AngloGold, De Beers, Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC), Debswana Diamond, Exxaro Resources, Vale, Mwana Africa, Adamus Resources, Cullinan Diamond Mine (Petra Diamonds), Rio Zim, Control Risks, the African Institute of Security, AFIMAC, BT and Medical Services International SOS.

The Forum will start on day 1 with a case study on the risk management process across the Debswana Diamond value chain, which will be led by the company’s Security Manager. This will be followed by a presentation on terrorism and extremist activities in Africa, which will be conducted by the Global Risk Analysis Associate Director of Control Risks. This session will look into the gradual expansion of extremism in Africa as a major security concern and will provide the audience with an overview of the main terrorist groups currently active in the area, including AQIM, Boko Haram, JAMBS and Ansaru in West Africa, and Al-Shabaab in the Eastern African region. The Forum will also host a highly topical session around the Ebola pandemic in West Africa and how it is affecting mining companies.

The Mining Security & Crisis Management Forum 2014 is sponsored by the multinational telecommunication services company BT; the security, labour dispute management and crisis response service company, Afimac; the drone technology company Dronetec; the safety and electronic security solutions provider FireSpec Systems; the security consultancy Omega Risk Solutions and the advisory firm EunomixTM.
