ECOWAS envoys plead for Ebola Aid directed to central governments

Guinea’s Ambassador in Brussels and Chairman of the ACP Group of States, Dr Ousmane Sylla has requested the Luxembourg government to direct aid for Ebola to the central governments of the affected countries

Appreciating the contributions of the Luxembourg government and other international partners in the fight against the Ebola disease, the Guinean envoy emphasized that the three most affected countries of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone have weak medical infrastructures and few qualified medical personnel.

“These medical infrastructures need to be strengthened and training of medical personnel in these countries also need be enhanced and only the central governments of these countries can undertake such exercises. It will be more useful if these aids are directed to the governments rather than directing them to international NGOs, even though we appreciate the roles played by these INGOs”, Dr Sylla insisted.

The Guinean envoy was speaking on behalf of his counterparts, Ambassador Ibrahim Sorie of Sierra Leone and Ambassador Jarjar Kamara of Liberia last Friday, October10th in Luxembourg during a meeting with that country’s Minister of Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid and other government functionaries to brief them on the current Ebola outbreak ravaging the three Mano River Union countries.

Liberia’s Ambassador Kamara said his country is the hardest hit and outlined the efforts being applied by the governments of Liberia, the USA and other international partners to arrest the situation.

Sierra Leone’s Minister of Transport and Aviation, Leonard Balogun Koroma who was part of the mission’s delegation said, “the Ebola pandemic has shaken the three countries, stigmatized families and households, changed our traditional practices and has turned everything upside down”.

He also briefed the meeting the steps taken by the Sierra Leone government and her international partners and further outlined the needs of the government in the Ebola war including PPEs and more Treatment Centres.

Mr. Koroma added that Ebola is new in the Mano River Union countries and the three most affected countries were ill-prepared when the outbreak occurred. “Our countries should not be blamed for the spread of the disease. If the Ebola disease can enter Spain, USA etc with all their sophisticated medical infrastructures, then our medical personnel must be commended for braving the fight”.

The Minister Counsellor of the Ghana Embassy in Brussels, Mawutor Alifo said though his country is yet to register any Ebola case, yet Ghana has offered her services and support to the affected countries and will continue to do so until the Ebola battle is won. “Together we can defeat Ebola”, he opined.

Luxembourg’s Minister of Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid, Romain Schneider sympathized with the governments and peoples of the affected countries, disclosing that his country has already contributed 700,000 euros (Seven Hundred Thousand Euros) towards the Ebola fight in the affected countries.

Mr. Schneider assured that his country will continue to help in mobilizing associations and other essential services, furthering Luxembourg is now sending telecommunication materials to the Serabu hospital in Southern Sierra Leone which is being manned by German doctors to help enhance their work. He hammered home the point for a proper coordination in the entire Ebola operations.
