Const. 049 MP Launches Ebola Campaign in Sierra Leone

Hon. Alhaji Serray Dumbuya (in photo), Member of Parliament for Constituency 049 Port Loko District on Tuesday 2nd September, 2014 launched an Ebola campaign at the Port Loko District Council Hall.

Hon. Alhaji Serray Dumbuya who chaired the ceremony stated that Ebola is real and encouraged people to always wash their hands with the slogan, “don’t touch”.

He said President Ernest Bai Koroma called on all Members of Parliament to go to their constituencies to take leadership role in the fight against Ebola and prayed for all Ebola victims urging, “we have held several Ebola meetings and making bylaws. The power belongs to the people and the people should accept the fact about Ebola and join the fight”.

He further admonished the ten Members of Parliament in Port Loko to work together in sensitizing their constituents and revealed that his Constituency is the last to launch the campaign.

Host Paramount Chief, Alhaji Adikali Mella II commended the MPs for coming together in sensitizing the people of the district and disclosed that there is no Ebola case in Maforki Chiefdom for which he called on his subjects to adhere to the Ebola preventive messages. He said together with the MP they have visited the thirty sections in the chiefdom to sensitize people on Ebola as the disease has no barrier and needed no passport.

Hon. Alhaji Ibrahim Kemoh Sesay, Political and Public Affairs Minister said the ten MPs have demonstrated unity in Port Loko District by joining hands in the fight against Ebola as President Ernest Bai Koroma called on all MPs to take leadership role in the fight.

Hon. Alhaji Ibrahim Kemoh Sesay acclaimed the MPs, the District Health Management Team and District Taskforce as the district has the most robust security personnel in quarantined communities, stating, “by God’s grace, September ending Ebola will go out of this country”. He said the ten days tour in the district by MPs has shown leadership in the Ebola fight during which everybody was curious to get the realities of Ebola as several people are worried over the increase in Ebola cases.

Assistant Inspector General of Police in the North-West of Port Loko, FUK Dabor revealed that 136 police personnel at 8 checkpoints with thermometers work closely with health workers.

AIG Dabor said the involvement of MPs and the District Council is very significant in the Ebola fight.

He presented Le 1 million to the Majority Leader of Parliament, Hon. Ibrahim Rasin Bundu as donation by AIG Al-Sheik Kamara to fight Ebola in Port Loko.

Port Loko District Medical Officer, Dr. Adikali Kamara said that the involvement of stakeholders in the Ebola fight has created an impact outlining several signs and symptoms of Ebola which are very complicating.

Dr. Adikali Kamara said Port Loko, Kambia, Bombali and Tonkolili share a single ambulance for Ebola and for the past three days they were unable to take blood samples to Kenema.

Senior District Officer and Port Loko District Taskforce Chairman, Mohamed Sheik Kargbo told the gathering that the health system in the district is very weak and providing food for the quarantined homes is one among the challenges.

He revealed that 75 households have been quarantined with 625 people adding that only three households have completed the 21-days quarantine period with 32 people tested negative. He outlined eleven chiefdoms that are free from Ebola including Maforki, Sanda Magbolothor, Dibia, Tainkatopa, Makama, Safrokor and Lokomassama whilest Buya Romende recorded the highest followed by Marampa, Masimbra, Koya, Bureh Kasseh Macontheh and Kaffu Bullom.

Majority Leader and MP for Constituency 052 who is also APC Port Loko District Chairman, Hon. Ibrahim Rasin Bundu said Ebola’s only cure is prevention the virus is contacted through body fluid which started with a single person from Guinea and due to denial, it is widely spreading in the country. He admonished all to adhere to the bylaws, adding, “Ebola is not like the rebel war and relatives should avoid touching and burying people without alerting health workers. We should be contact tracers and surveillance officers”.

Port Loko District Council Chairman, Ahmid Munirr Fofanah said that the council provides support for control measures since the outbreak and all development projects are standstill.

Chief Immigration Officer, Alpha Kholifa Koroma donated Le 7.5 million worth of assorted food items to intensify the fight.
