Lunsar – (11 August 2014) – London Mining is pleased to announce the refurbishment of the Lunsar Health Centre, including construction of a new ten-bed maternity ward, as part of the Company’s support for the Government of Sierra Leone’s Primary Healthcare Agenda for mothers and children under five.

Commenting on the Company’s support for the programme, Mbalu Sesay, Community Relations Manager at London Mining, said, “The refurbishment of the Lunsar Health Centre was a wonderful opportunity to be part of both a local and national initiative. London Mining is excited to see the beneficial impact it will have on the people of Lunsar, now and in the future.”

The US$80,000 (Le 36 million) project also includes the construction of a new general ward – with five beds for men and five for women – excavation of a water well and the building of a perimeter fence to secure the Health Centre.

In thanking London Mining for its support, the Community Health Officer for Lunsar, Mr Sheku Koroma, noted that an estimated 20,000 people from the Marampa and Masimra chiefdoms will have access to the new wards saying that, “This refurbished centre will allow more consultations, faster emergency care, and greater access to health professionals, greatly improving the health and well-being of new and future parents and their children.”

The Lunsar Health Centre refurbishment represents a part of London Mining’s continued investment in community development intended to generate sustainable economic and social impacts in its area of operations – manifested through its support for educational programmes, scholarships, vocational training, safe drinking water provision, agricultural projects and road-works.

London Mining Company’s Managing Director Dan Desjardins said, “London Mining has made a long term commitment to Sierra Leone, and we are pleased to support the communities of Marampa and Masimra.”
