Deadly Dams

The long term operation of the Sierra Rutile Mining Company in Bonthe and Moyamba Districts has left a series of deep and deadly dams in several communities in those districts.

Just visit the rutile mines and you will be welcomed by the dangerous dams with their mouths wide-open ready to devour anyone who ventures them.

These deadly dams are notorious for routinely drowning local residents of the mining communities who venture to cross over them in canoes to their farms.

Besides, the perilous dams continue to serve as a major threat to the residents of the mining communities who are always at risk of drowning should the dams overflow.

We have been reliably informed that Sierra Rutile Mining Company has been making several vain promises to refill the dams and make them suitable for agriculture or other purposes. We are also aware of the inescapable fact that it is part of the company’s corporate social responsibility to refill those deadly dams so that they will cease being a threat to the lives of the local people.

But why has Sierra Rutile not been refilling the dangerous dams and keep creating new ones every day? We are recommending that government should intervene and ensure that the company refills those deep dams which keep killing and threatening the people of the mining communities.
