Sierra Leone Parliament orders Tourism Ministry to account for Le500M

The Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Finance and Development has ordered the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs to account for the sum of Le 500 million which was given to the ministry in 2013 to organize a cultural festival show in Bo.

The committee gave the order during a recent hearing in the administrative building of parliament where the ministry was summoned for questioning.

The order came from the committee’s suspicion that the ministry misused the said money. The committee has instructed the ministry to bring all the necessary supporting documents to justify the use of the money. The committee told the Tourism Minister, Peter B Conteh, the Permanent Secretary, Nancy Tengbeh and the Accountant, Kadie Finoh to surrender the requested documents next hearing.

The Committee Chairman, Hon. Hassan B. Sheriff of Constituency 053 in the Port-Loko District, noted that over the years, they have discovered several pitfalls in the Tourism Ministry, especially regarding the use of public funds. He reminded the ministry’s mandate to probe into the operations of all the ministries in Sierra Leone.

Hon. Hassan B. Sheriff ordered that, apart from the Le 500 million, the ministry must also account for 3rd and 4th quarter budget allocation from government and other sources.
