Sierra Leone Speaker of Parliament says no one is above the law

Freetown, June 2 (SLENA) – The Speaker of Parliament, Hon. SBB Dumbuya has warned his colleague parliamentarians that no one is above the law including himself as speaker of parliament.

He said parliamentarians must cooperate with the police in order to maintain law and order, noting that lawlessness is becoming endemic in the country. He said while parliamentarians remain the law makers the police are the implementers, pointing out that parliament should be a respecter of the laws and not above it.

He admonished MPs to work with the police to protect the law. ”If you are the maker of the law you should be mindful of those laws,” he warned.

The speaker made these remarks last week Thursday while parliament was on the process of approving presidential appointees who Hon. Salamatu Turay as Board member of the Sierra Leone Commercial Bank, Mr. Sylvester B. Goba, Board member, Sierra Rutile Limited, Hon. Charles H. Kalawa, Board member Rokel Commercial Bank, Mr. Maya Kaikai, Board Chairman  of the Sierra Leone Road Transport Corporation and Festus E Minah, Chairman,  Board of trustees of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC).

Various MPs mad valuable contributions including Hon. Rado Yokie who admonished the approved nominees to work in the interest of the country and forget about political party affiliations, particularly the new chairman of the SLBC board of trustees, Mr. Minah who he said should respond adequately to the challenges facing the cooperation

Chief Whip, Hon Claude Kamanda admonished the nominees especially former MPs to uphold the discipline they got from parliament while Sheku Armani Sanoh commended Hon Salamatu Turay on her appointment as board member of the Sierra Leone Commercial Bank, saying he has no doubt about her honesty and straightforwardness.

Leader of the house, Hon Ibrahim Bundu called on the nominees to set good examples in their different areas of work as they will be facing challenges but that should not make them relent in serving the nation.
