In her invitation letter the CEO Sarata began as follows:

“I am writing to inform you all that we are having a sponsored walk entitled “STOP RAPE NOW” to raise funds and promote awareness of the work that the Rainbo Centres do here in sierra-Leone. We believe there is an increase in these types of incidents within our communities and we want to bring to the attention of the public the negative impact that this has on our population.

The Rainbo Centres are sexual assault referral centres operating from government hospital premises in Freetown, Kenema and Kono. They have been in operation since 2003. The rainbo centres support women, girls and other vulnerable groups in our communities who have suffered sexual assault incidents including rape. In 2003 the Rainbo Centres were able to care for 1,898 women and girls who had suffered sexual assault incidents.

Rainbo Centres offer free services which include; medical examination and treatment for illnesses and injuries caused by the assault.

Counseling to help cope with the emotional and psychological effects of rape, help in reporting the incident to the police, to provide information on the legal system if a person wants to take their case to court, referral to relevant agencies for any further help not provided for by the Rainbo Centres. The services provided by the RCs are desperately needed in all our communities here in SL and we are working towards sustainability for the centres”.
