Doctors and Nurses on Strike

Medical practitioners and nurses in the Western Area last week commenced a sit down strike for what they described as their ‘poor conditions of service’ and the government’s failure to address their welfare.

Some doctors and nurses of the Ola During Children’s Hospital and Connaught Hospital said the government had promised to introduce a free healthcare programme for pregnant and lactating mothers and children under five years of age, without putting proper measures in place to address the welfare of medical and health workers.

The medical and health workers also claimed that the government promised them a package without telling them the contents of the package. The aggrieved workers vowed not to return to work until their welfare was addressed. Lactating mothers who visited the Ola-During Children’s Hospital last week expressed their dissatisfaction over the strike action.

They urged the government to address the demands of the medical and health personnel. Meanwhile, the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Kizito Sheku Daoh declined to comment on the strike action by the medical and health workers, when contacted.
