Foreign Affairs Minister Honoured in South Africa

The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs  and International Cooperation of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Mrs. Zainab Hawa Bangura was Monday, March 8th 2010 honoured by her colleague Honourable Minister of Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of the Republic of South Africa, Her Excellency Mrs. Maite Nkoana-Mashabane as Special Guest in celebrations marking the “Year of Women.” The event, held at the prestigious Presidential Lounge at the South African capital of Pretoria, also included strategic discussions on the role of women in further promoting global peace and security, the promotion of the rights of women, especially the girl-child, and the putting in place of arrangements that would curb, if not eliminate, domestic violence

It will be recalled that the Assembly of the African Union in 2009 declared 2010-2020 the African Women’s Decade. The meeting was therefore organised as part of the celebrations marking the 2010 as the African Year of Peace in which South African Foreign Affairs reiterated the need for African women to be involved  to further push the peace processes in Africa, where millions of people are killed and displaced due to civil strife.

The Guest of Honour was Juliana Lumumba, the only daughter of the late President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Patrice Lumumba. The event was climaxed with a gala dinner and dance.
