Stand off in Kabala as youths and cattle rearers draw daggers

The youths at Alkalia village and its environs within the Koinadugu District are reported to be very angry with the way and manner the cattle rearers are treating them with impunity. It could be recalled that on January 8 this year the newly constructed reservoir dam that was built by the Member of Parliament for Constituency 046, Hon. Daniel Brima Koroma, was massively contaminated by cattle feces. This prompted the youths to wage war on the cattle rearers demanding that they should vacate the village together with their animals.  (Photo credit: Awareness Times)

This was done as a peaceful demonstration which turned into a riot and Police had to intervene to bring the situation under control.

Thereafter the youths gave a 21-day ultimatum to the Fullan rearers to vacate the village, which reports say they have refused to comply with.

In an exclusive interview with the youth Chairman, Mr. Abu Tarwallie, he said they will not pay any taxes levied on them until their demands are met.

He explained that they have demanded the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security, Dr. Joseph Sam Sesay to convey a meeting with them, the cattle rearers and the authorities concerned to settle the dispute.

Earlier, the Paramount Chief of Alkalia on January 24 drove along the nearby junction leading to his home town of Kumala demanding that the Police should invite all the township youths to Alkalia for proper discussion of the matter.

This press was informed that the young people have refused to cooperate with the invitation of the Paramount and that tension continues to mount.
