PPASL set to popularize the Gender Acts of 2007

Bo, Jan. 28 (SLENA) – Planned Parenthood Association of Sierra Leone (PPASL), Bo branch recently engaged stakeholders in a one day capacity building and advocacy campaign techniques at the Conference Hall, Growth Centre in Bo.

The one day session was designed to introduce to participants new advocacy strategies to popularize the Gender Base and Domestic Violence Act, the devolution of Estate Act, the Customary Marriage Act and the Divorce Act, all of 2007.

In his welcome address, PPASL Project Supervisor, Emmanuel S. Sesay emphasized the importance PPASL attaches to the session, and called on the participants to treat the training seriously and pass on to others in their respective communities the knowledge that will gain.

In her statement, PPASL, south-east, Madam Hannah Mallah described PPASL as a non-governmental organization charged with the responsibility of challenging issues that relate to gender based violence, sexual and reproductive health related problems, family planning, sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS.

Explaining to her audience the meaning of the 5-As in their programme, the PPASL Manager referred to them as Abstinence, Adolescence, Advocacy, Abortion and HIV/AIDS.

In her chairman opening statement, the Gender Desk Officer, Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs, Madam Alice Jeneba Koroma described the session as very important and that if handled well it will help reduce the above subjects.

Women and girls, Madam Koroma, stressed suffer most in the hands of their male counterparts.
