Annie Walsh pupil wins Innovate Sierra Leone Award in America

A Senior Secondary School III Science pupil, Miss Kadjatu Daramy of the Annie Walsh Memorial School in Freetown, on Tuesday, December 3 this year collected an Innovate Sierra Leone award in Washington DC in the USA after she emerged in the first position in Technology Innovation.

This was made known to the public through an exclusive interview with the Principal of the Annie Walsh Memorial School in Freetown, Mrs. Ophelia Morrison on Friday, December 6 this year when celebrating their annual sports meeting at the Main Bowl of the National Stadium in Freetown.

She described the sports meeting as a moment of relaxation, because, as she puts it, more work without play will make Jack a dull boy.

She revealed that this year’s sporting activities marked the commemoration of the 165th Anniversary of the Annie Walsh School.

She opined that the winning of the award by Miss Kadijatu Daramy is a reflection of the premium the school pays on girls in Science education. She noted that the girl’s success emerged as a result of the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders including the vibrant Annie Walsh Old Girls Association (AWOGA).

When asked how she copes up with the girls in terms of discipline, she replied that she has no problem with discipline, because all her girls are very hard working and obedient.

She further stated that the only setback she has in the school is the unavailability of enough Teachers as it is the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology that recruits Teachers for them.

Giving a brief background about herself, Madam Ophelia Morrison stated that she served for six years as Principal of the Prince of Wales Secondary School and she has been Principal of the Annie Walsh Memorial School for five years, while she is also the Vice Chairman of the Conference of Principals of Secondary schools in the Western Area.

She explained that their Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results were very good this year as their school was ranked among the best ten in the country.

She stressed that that there are a lot of problems in schools all over the country, but she was quick to recommend that school professionals and every  member of the society should put their hands on deck to achieve the objectives of secondary schools.

While describing the 6344 education system as good, she observed that she hopes it will work well for the country but that if it did not work well is not a do or die battle but the stakeholders can go back to the drawing board and review it.
