In an effort to restore peace and unity among the people of the Guard Street environs and the pupils of the Ansarul Muslim Secondary School, the Local Unit Commander of the Eastern Police Station, Chief Superintendent of Police Memunatu Conteh, over the weekend engaged elders of the various communities, who, she said will help the Sierra Leone Police restore sustainable peace and unity among the people and pupils of the school.

In an interview with this Reporter, she stated that the recent misunderstanding that led to the riot that resulted in the death of a pupil, Alhaji Badow, was very unfortunate for the people of this country and caused a lot of negative interpretations from the public regarding the reputation of the Sierra Leone Police.

She explained that it is the duty of the Sierra Leone Police to secure the lives and properties of the people but that upon their intervention in certain issues, their role has been misunderstood by the general public which she said normally leads to panic, rush and confrontations from arrogant people on Police personnel.

She disclosed that on her return to the country recently, she received reports that the pupil of the Ansarul Secondary School was stabbed by an unidentified youth during the confrontation.

She further explained that the Police have also been accused of having shot the pupil, a matter which she said is now being investigated for redress.

She promised to work closely with the people of the affected communities and other stakeholders to help develop strategies that will help the Police gain more ideas on their interventions in similar situations in the future.

Some community elders who spoke to this Reporter said they will cooperate with the Police to restore peace and unity among the concerned communities.

They further said that as elders, they will continue to plead with the children and authorities of that school and the family of Alhaji Badow to exercise patience until the investigation is completed.
