Political interference brings trouble to Blackpool

One of Sierra Leone’s most popular football clubs, Mighty Blackpool, is reported to be in turmoil after President Ernest Bai Koroma reportedly persuaded some members of the aggrieved party to play the ongoing Premier League competition against their wish.

Before the election of Madam Isha Johansen who was labeled as an APC candidate as President of the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), ten Premiership clubs boycotted the league because of the disqualification of Messrs Mohamed Kallon, Rodney Michael, John Dissa, and others.

President Koroma is believed to have invited all the warring parties in the FA to a round table discussion to resolve their differences but to no avail as he did not want to take decisions which will be described as political interference.

When Madam Isha Johansen became the newly elected President of SLFA, majority clubs were still reluctant to play in the Premiership league in the country.

President Koroma again invited the Mighty Blackpool Chairman, Mr. Patrick Bangura, also known as “Gbetgbo,” Central Parade Chairman, Mr. Siragin Rolling-Kamara, and WAFA Secretary General, Mr. Kasho Hollande Cole, all reportedly APC loyalists, to State House and where he is reported to have prevailed on them to join the league, which they did.

Many football stakeholders have informed this press that President Koroma has listened to their grievances and that he has interfered politically by resolving the impasse in favour of the current FA.

The President’s decision has led to some executive members of the Mighty Blackpool Football Club, namely, Husein Fawaz and Femi Hebron who are the club’s big spenders to turn their backs against the club and now Mighty Blackpool has reportedly fallen apart whilst in camp.

Last week, they were to travel to Tongo and engage Gem Stars in the ongoing Premier League but players of the club did not turn up and the technical team went home embarrassed and disappointed.

Most other groups are now splinted into various groups because of President Koroma’s direct intervention, this paper has learnt.
