East End passengers vow violent demonstration in Sierra Leone

Sequel to  our article ‘ Operation more trouble for half way drivers’ passengers plying the east end of Freetown route have vowed to put up a violent demonstration against lawless commercial transport drivers that are failing to observe the SLRTA recommended routing.

Commercial passengers bemoan the several constraints that they are facing to travel to the central and other parts of the capital from their various destinations in the east. These aggrieved passengers are forced to pay thrice or above the required transport fare on a daily basis without which they are restrained in their normal movement around the city.

Several complaints have been made to the authorities concerned but the situation seems to be worsening as the days go by. Some irate passengers interviewed at the Calaba Town terminal threatened to go on the rampage very soon at an unannounced date to set some of these commercial transports ablaze, so that their plight will be address.

Some others blamed the law enforcement agencies, the traffic wardens and the motor drivers union of not being up to the task as the always receives bribes from the drivers and give a blind eye to the unlawful habits of these drivers.

A petty trader at Melon Street in Wellington lamented that she pays transportation fare for three of her wards attending schools in the west and central of the city and she spends a total of Le22,000 on a daily basis. “This is far too much for a single parent like me, the authorities need to take a firm stance on this lawlessness and get these wicked drivers to know that nobody is above the law”, she blasted.

Others at the Texaco terminal were outraged as they told our reporter that it is a deliberate attempt by wicked drivers to fleece passengers in the guise of what they refer to as halfway route.

This situation is gradually blowing out of proportion as passengers including employees and pupils alike continue to strand for transport services within the capital Freetown. We are therefore calling on the police to arrest this indignant display of unpatriotism orchestrated by commercial transporters less we begin to experience a spill over effect.
