Education Ministry to close schools

The Minister of Education, Science & Technology, Dr. Minkailu Bah, has disclosed his ministry’s intention to start closing down schools and other learning institutions which are not accredited by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) and the National Commission for Technical Vocational and Other Awards (NCTVA)

Addressing journalists past week at a briefing at the conference hall of the Education Ministry at New England in Freetown, the minister revealed that one of the institutions that may be affected is the Institute of Management, Accounting and Technology (IMAT) at Mountain Cut in Freetown, which, he said, are offering degree courses even though they do not have the facilities to undertake such courses.

Dr. Bah warned that teachers who fail to submit their verification forms to the Education Ministry within 60 days will have their names deleted from the payroll, stressing that he will not allow teachers to defraud the system by receiving free salaries.

He reminded, headmasters, headmistresses, and principals that, henceforth, they will now be signing performance contracts and that if they under-perform, they will first be warned and later terminated, noting that he himself has signed a performance contract with His Excellency the President, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma.

The minister observed that many school heads fail to ensure that their pupils dress properly to school and called on them to instill discipline in their schools, especially in the areas of dress code and punctuality.

Dr. Bah concluded by frowning at school heads that mismanage school funds and urged them to desist from the ugly practice or face the dire consequences of the law.
