Nigeria Awards Salone Generals

The National Defence College (NDC) in the Federal Republic of Nigeria recently presented the Award of Distinguished Alumnus Star of the Defence to two senior army officers of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) who are ex- tudents of the College.  (Photo: Brig.  The two honoured officers are the Deputy Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier-General John Milton and the National Coordinator of the Office of National Security (ONS) Brig. Gen, Mustapha Kawuota Dumbuya (Rtd).

According to sources close to the National Defence College, the two officers were awarded in recognition of their outstanding military performance. The award, sources continued, was signed by both the Commandant of the college, Rear Admiral T.J. Lokoson and the Chairman of the College Governing Board.

Formed in 1992, the NDC was initially called National War College but was later renamed the National Defence College which is the highest military institution in Nigeria for the training of senior Army officers, Navy, Air Force, the police and civilian counterparts for strategic leadership both national and internationally.

Reports say Brig. Gen. John Milton, during the days of his course, was the best foreign participant while the National Coordinator Brig. Gen. M.K. Dumbuya (Rtd) was the first Army officer of the RSLAF to enter the College in 1996, four years after its establishment.

Dumbuya was among the most outstanding officers during course which had a total of 45 participants drawn from the West Africa sub- region. He later proceed to the University of Ibadan in Nigeria where he pursued his Master Degree in strategic studies. Since then to date, many Army officers  have undergone this course in Nigeria including the Chief of Defence Staff Major Gen, S.O. Williams, Brigadier General Komba Sahr Mondeh (Rtd) to name a few.

The award ceremony was held recently in Nigeria during the graduation ceremony of Course 21 of the NDC, although they were unable to witness the presentation ceremony,  the Assistant Chief of Defence Staff of the RSLAF Brig. Gen. DTO Taluva, who was among the successful participants of course 21 received the awards on behalf of his senior colleagues.
