Members of the United Communities of Muslims {UCM) in Sierra Leone, popularly known as the Basharian Mission, last Friday unanimously endorsed the appointment of the new  Chairman and Leader of the main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP),  Alhaji Chief Bai Shebora Somanoh Kapen (in photo) .

The endorsement came in when Chief Somanoh Kapen was offering his usual  Friday prayers  at the Bombay Street Central Mosque, the headquarters of the Basharian Mission in Sierra Leone.

There was a large influx of Muslims scrambling to behold and shake hands with the new SLPP National Chairman and Leader.

Receiving the SLPP Chairman and Leader and his entourage in the Mosque, the National Chairman of the Basharian Mission, Alhaji Ibrahim Sorie Kamara, on behalf of the Spiritual Leader, Alhaji Sheikh Abubakarr Kamara and the entire Muslim jamaat, welcomed Chief Somanoh Kapen.

“ We are very proud of you as you are the first Temne man to assume that position, for us your tribesmen, we are proud for the honour and dignity you have bestowed to the Temne in Sierra Leone,” the Basharian Chairman stated joyfully.

Responding, Chief Alhaji Bai Shebora Somanoh Kapen thanked the Spiritual Leader and the National Chairman of the Basharian Mission for the warm hospitality accorded him and his entourage.

He paid glowing tribute to the Founder and Leader of the Basharian Mission in Sierra Leone, Imam Bashar Sankon-Yillah of blessed memory, who, he said, sowed the seed of Islamic awareness, noting he is not alive today to enjoy the fruit of his labour, his fine legacy is being enjoyed by Muslims and non Muslims. He prayed that  Allah protect and reward him with heaven.

Chief Somanoh Kapen said his election as Chairman and Leader of the SLPP has a motive which is to galvanize his tribesmen, the Temnes who are referred to as the Chinese of Sierra Leone, to ensure that the SLPP bounces back to power in 2018.

He appealed to his tribesmen for their unflinching support, adding that with him as head of the party, the SLPP will forge ahead with a difference.

Members of Chief Kapen’s  entourage were, the National Organizing Secretary, Sheku Kandeh, his deputy, Chief Alhaji Mohamed Baimba Fadika, the SLPP Chairman, Bo District, Chief Alhaji Kanja Sesay, Deputy Women’s Leader, Mrs. Fatmata Sawaneh Ngakui,  and the National Imam, Sheikh Mohamed Hassan Koroma.
