The Head of Media and Public Relations at African Minerals Limited (AML), has disclosed their desire to capacitate Sierra Leoneans.  AML has certified 7 locals (6 males and 1 female) as the first fully trained and qualified Sierra Leonean train drivers.

Mr. Anthony Navo Jr. explained that the process started some two years ago when 42 Sierra Leoneans were recruited as Assistant Train Drivers and taken through various theoretical and practical exercises related to the driving and operation of a train.

He said the 7 were selected and promoted to Level 4 and also taken through basic courses like Train Shunting, Troubleshooting, and the Operation of Train Brakes and Locomotives for another period of 8 weeks.

He explained that these drivers are expected to fully sign their first permanent contracts with AML which will require them to take over from respective foreign train drivers, whilst the remaining 34 are expected to soon complete their training and join them.

Mr. Navo stated that they have met with the colleges and other government stakeholders with a view to solicit their cooperation and support towards the establishment of a skills training institute at Magburaka and Pepel which would eventually train youths in various skills that would allow them take over from the expatriates in line with the country’s local content policy.
