Standard Chartered Bank Responds to Cholera Awareness at Congo Town & Murray Town Communities

Following the Bank’s response to the Cholera Epidemic last year, at Marbella and Old Wharf communities, over 100 staff of Standard Chartered Bank Sierra Leone, last Saturday 17th August 2013 volunteered at the Congo Town (Kolleh Town) and Murray Town (Banana Water) communities to educate the deprived on prevention and treatment of the Cholera disease, to combat the epidemic in the country.

This is a direct response to the governments call on all well meaning organisations in Sierra Leone to help fight against cholera and reduce the death toll of citizens contacting the virus.

Standard Chartered Bank in partnership with the Ministry of Health (Health Education Unit) toured the length and breadth of both communities, taking the national key messages on Cholera to the doorsteps of citizens, educating members of the public on prevention and treatment, whilst distributing Oral Rehydration Salts to households.

Commenting on behalf of the Bank, David Mansaray, Acting Chief Finance Officer & Chief Operating Officer said,

“Banks have an essential role in a prosperous and healthy society.  We believe that by running our operations well, standing by our clients and customers and investing in the communities where we operate, we can be a powerful force for good.

Standard Chartered has a strong history of supporting the communities in which it operates and recognises its capacity for social and economic contribution, the need to protect the environment and be an example of good governance.

The bank is committed to building a sustainable business over the long term and is trusted in Sierra Leone for upholding high standards of corporate governance, social responsibility, environmental protection and employee diversity.

On behalf of the Bank, I would like to take this opportunity to thank UNICEF, for their invaluable support in providing the Cholera drugs we have been distributing to the deprived today. Also thanking the Health Education Unit of the Ministry of Health for the IEC materials provided and the Cholera education given to the Bank staff to enable us carry the messages to the public. Standard Chartered remains ‘Here for good’ in Sierra Leone.”
