Struggle for supremacy continues in Koidu Town

It was an early morning for the Airtel Rising Stars in Kono, as the organizers had rescheduled the matches for this Friday to make way for the Premier League match between Diamond Stars and Kamboi Eagles. Nonetheless the first game was another demonstration of the potential that Airtel Rising Stars is discovering all over the country.

Finaza Queens from Kono took on Bintumani Queens from Koinadugu in a crucial match for both teams as they were unable to score all three points on the first day. Finaza Queens were able to hold off an attacking Bintumani Queens and the game ended 0-0. Finaza Queens has collected two points so far while still have a lifeline to continue to the finale on Sunday, though they only have one point.

In the second match the expectations of the crowd was raised as Kono United met up with Hydro Queens. The players again showed their talents but found it difficult to open the score. When the referee blew his whistle for the last time the scoreboard was still 0-0 leaving Kono United in the lead with four points followed by Hydro Queens with two points.

Today, Kono United will meet Finaza Queens in a Kono meeting while in the first match of the day the current champions Bintumani Queens will have to show their face in a match with Hydro Queens from Bumbuna.

The regional tournament in Koidu turns out to be a very tight competition as only 1 team from the 10 taking part knows its fate after the first two days. In the third match of the day Professional Lions from Kono made their debut and managed to take the lead against Onwords Young Stars. It was Foday Kallon who scored in the 23rd minute.  Realizing that if the score remained against them, they would be out of the tournament Onwords Young Stars took to the attack in the second half.  Chances to score were their reward but it looked like they would not succeed till the dying minutes when substitute Mohamed Koroma leveled the score 1-1 and saved them from an early exit.

After two draws in Group A the fate of Onwords Young Stars depends on the outcome of the match between Flamingo FC and Professional Lions, both from Kono. A draw in this match may get them a place in Sundays final.

The last match of the day was a Northern region derby between Tonkili Young Stars and Albiataia FC from Koinadagu. Albiataia FC was determined to prove their supremacy over their brothers from Tonkolili and took the lead early in the second half through a goal by their number 9, Mohamed S. Bangura. Seven minutes later the match looked decided as Mamud Koroma added a goal and gave Albiataia a comfortable 2-0 lead.  Tonkolili Young Stars battled till the end but despite a consolation goal by Mohamed S. Kamara they were the first team to exit the Airtel Rising Stars tournament in Kono.  Albiataia FC has taken the lead in Group B with three points from their one match and will take on Eastham United, who have one point, in today’s final group match.
