In Sierra Leone, illicit miners defy government
Although the Government of Sierra Leone has put a moratorium on the mining and selling of Zircon, reports from Shenge in the Moyamba District state the illicit miners there have defied the ban as they are still busy mining the Zircon sand clandestinely at night.
Our sources say the illicit miners are still engaged in environmentally destructive mining along the Shenge beach, especially near the expensive jetty which their illegal mining activities have already damaged.
We have further gathered that the police, the mines officials and local authorities are quite aware of the continuity of the destructive mining but are doing little to arrest the ugly situation due to obvious reasons!
