Temporal ban on Zircon Mining

Following reports of rampant illicit mining of Zircon in Moyamba, the Government of Sierra Leone is reported to have put a temporal ban on the mining, selling and buying of Zircon until the situation is regularized.

This information was relayed to Sierra Express Media by the Communications Manager of the National Mining Agency (NMA), Sartie Kamara, during a recent interview with this press.

Mr. Kamara informed that the ban will give chance to the NMA, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other concerned organizations to look into the illegal mining and find out the areas of breaches and make recommendations for a way forward.

He said the police and local authorities have been urged to ensure that the ban is enforced until further notice.

However, it has been alleged that some stubborn illicit miners are still mining the Zircon sand in Tisana and Mobureh, thereby violating government’s temporal ban.
