Road to Brazil! Tunisia seal Knockout spot ahead of Leone Stars

The Cartage Eagles of Tunisia (in photo) secured their place in the knockout stage on the road to Brazil when they played 1-1 draw at the Estadio de Malabo on Sunday against host Equatorial Guinea.

Equatorial Guinea registered their opening goal from the spot by Juvenal in the 36th minute; however the North Africans levelled things up midway through the second half goal from Oussama Darragi to maintain their unbeaten run in the group.

While Sierra Leone’s Leone Stars, heartbreak in previous World Cup and African Cup of nations qualifiers continues, on Saturday Leone Stars made it easy for their North African counterparts after losing in Cape Verde.

Tunisia now has an unquestionable lead in Group B, as they prepared to host Cape Verde in September in Tunis, while Sierra Leone entertains Equatorial Guinea in Freetown.

Meanwhile, Bafana Bafana’s hopes of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil ended in heartbreak. Bernard Parker defensive blunder gifted Ethiopia a 2-1 win, in the capital Addis Ababa on Sunday.

The result means Ethiopia, with a watertight five point lead with one qualifying match remaining, automatically finish top of Group A and progress to the final round of World Cup qualifier playoffs.

Elsewhere, Cameroon’s poor showing in World Cup qualifiers continues. A week after their 2-0 loss against minnow Togo in their fourth World Cup qualifiers, the indomitable Lions were held to a goalless draw by DR Congo on Sunday in Kinshasa in Group I.

Despite Sunday’s draw, Cameroon hopes of reaching the final phase of World Cup qualifiers still alive as they remained second in the group with seven points – two behind leaders Libya, who defeated Togo 2-0 on Friday.

Algeria took one step closer to the final World Cup qualifying round with a 1-0 away win over Rwanda in Group H. Bologna forward Saphir Taïder scored the winner in the 52nd minute, giving his team three precious points in Kigali.

As always the ten group winners will advance to a two-legged playoff that will determine Africa’s five representatives at next year’s World Cup finals in Brazil.
