Massive Deforestation in Selenga – Paramount Chief Worried

Paramount Chief of Selenga Chiefdom, Desmond Kagobai, has raised concern over the rampant illegal deforestation in his chiefdom, a situation which, he said, keeps worrying him.

Raising the concern during an exclusive interview with Sierra Express Media in the chiefdom headquarter, Dambala, Chief Kagobai informed that even the forest reserves are not spared by the illicit loggers, wood cutters and farmers who, he noted, continue to deforest his chiefdom at random without his knowledge or consent.

He stressed that the worrisome development bears the potential to starve the chiefdom which largely depends on forest to survive being a farming community, adding that all his efforts to address the problem have proven futile.

He called on the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security to assist him to protect the forest reserves, particularly and to further help him afforest the deforested areas.
