Jenekeh Deserves National Award

I wonder why President Ernest Bai Koroma did not include the founder of KIDS Radio, Andrew Jenekeh Kromah, in the recent prestigious national awards to outstanding Sierra Leoneans? I wonder because I believe Andrew Koroma deserves a national award far more than many of those who received it by virtue of the significant role he has been playing in promoting the media in Sierra Leone.

Andrew Jenekeh Koroma carries the credit of launching the first FM radio, KISS 104 FM, in the South, East and Northern provinces of Sierra Leone as far back as 1993 and that radio has been broadcasting till this day. KISS FM was brave enough to keep broadcasting throughout the war years and played a remarkable role in advocating for the peace this nation is now enjoying.

Besides, Andrew Koroma is the founder of the SKYY FM 106.6, now SKYY Women’s World Network, which is among the first FM radio stations to be established in Freetown. Most recently, he has founded and launched the first KIDS Radio FM 103.0 in our capital city, Freetown. This man is one of the pioneers of the series of community radio stations now serving this country. Many prominent journalists in Sierra Leone, including this writer passed through the hands of Andrew Jenekeh Koroma.

Jenekeh, as popularly called, is a founding member of the Independent Radio Network (IRN) which has been giving tremendous support to the National Electoral Commission (NEC) in the announcement of presidential and parliamentary election results. He is the founder of the Media Foundation for Peace and Democracy (MFPD).  Jenekeh’s role in promoting the Sierra Leone Media must not go unrecorded and he deserves a national for giving voice to many citizens of this republic. Failing to award such a patriotic citizen is tantamount to flagrant ingratitude for which posterity will never forgive us.

Therefore, I am advising President Koroma to consider Andrew Jenekeh Koroma for the next national awards as this man also deserves the award of Grand Commander of the Rokel like Doctor Sam Sesay, Professor Redwood Sawyer, the late Primate Fofana and others.
