Airtel backbone tower in Port Loko goes down

On Saturday 25th May, 21013Airtel’s 50 meter backbone tower at Port Loko market collapsed due to bad weather caused by the combined force of heavy wind, rain and lightning.  Fortunately, there were no casualties due to this incident.

The site, being the backbone tower caused 14 other sites to go down. The following actions were undertaken to restore the sites and protect the backbone,

  1. High sensitivity to Field Operations Team and Guards to avoid any outage.
  2. Rerouting of sites and redundancy of the backbone to minimize the risk.
  3. Creating an alternate Parallel Backbone to close the Transmission Ring.
  4. New Tower installation to bring up the site and backbone protection as per the plan.

Airtel has put in place measures for the installation of a backbone to bring up the site.

Presently, all the sites have been restored and traffic is now being routed to the Port Loko site that was affected.
