WACSI strengthens the institutional capacities of CSOs in Liberia

Accra, Ghana – A five-day training for CSOs in Liberia opens today in Monrovia, capital of Liberia.  17 civil society organisations (CSOs) will from Monday April 29 to Friday May 3, 2013, have their institutional and operational capacities strengthened by the West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI). This specialized capacity building programme, initiated and supported by Trust Africa for its civil society partners in Liberia will be delivered in the areas of Board Governance (April 29-30) and Strategic Planning (from May 1-3).  (Photo: Executive Director, Ms. Nana Afadzinu)

The training is being organised in response to a capacity gap identified within civil society in Liberia by a needs assessment commissioned by Trust Africa in 2011. Supported by Trust Africa, the training targets CSOs in Liberia that partner with Trust Africa to influence and deliver development dividends. It has been organized and tailored to provide a customised capacity development programme to strengthen the organisational structures and operational delivery of participating organisations.

The training which is scheduled to hold in Monrovia has been welcomed by beneficiary organisations who see this as a unique opportunity to build robust institutional structures and enhance their overall performance in the pursuit of development goals in the country.

According to Lamii Kpargoi of the Liberia Media Center (LMC), who will participate in the training, “I am interested in getting more understanding on Strategic Planning especially as it is related to mapping out and taking advantage of new potential opportunities like the use of new media in project implementation”.

This he said would empower him with the requisite skills to respond to the Strategic Planning challenges his organisation is currently facing. He pointed out that this training will enable him to contribute in providing strategic direction to LMC, and guiding colleagues to work towards achieving organisational goals.

This training is the first phase of a two year capacity building programme for Trust Africa’s partners in Liberia. Mr. Charles Vandyck, Capacity Building Officer of WACSI emphasised the importance of this programme stating that, “this project broadly seeks to strengthen the institutional and operational capacities of Trust Africa partners in Liberia through the provision of long term tailor-made process training courses covering various aspects of program design, implementation and evaluation as well as fundraising and advocacy”.

Future phases of the project will provide beneficiaries with training opportunities to strengthen their institutional and operational skills. These will cover themes including Human Resource Management, Financial Management and Budgetary Control, Resource Mobilisation and Proposal Writing, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning, and, Policy Research and Analysis.

WACSI has successfully organised trainings which have benefitted CSOs in all 16 West African countries. The Institute was created in 2005 by the Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA) to strengthen the capacities of civil society in West Africa. WACSI also strengthens capacities by conducting and disseminating research on topical issues that explore development challenges that civil society strives to address.
