Emmerson, Willie Jay, Innocent, Wan Pot Comedians for Presidential Honor

“It has graciously pleased His Excellency Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma Koroma, President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Supreme Head of State,  Grand Commander of the Order of the Republic , Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and Fountain Head of Unity, Honor, Freedom and Justice, to make the following awards:…,” a public notice from State House reads.

The Sierra Leone National Honors and Awards is an annual Independence Day event which seek to recognized those individuals and institutions that have contributed to the development of Sierra Leone in their various ways.

The event is held every year at State House with the Commander in Chief bestowing the country`s highest honor to those individuals that have served the country.  The 2013 National Honors is perhaps the first in the events history to honor a number of Sierra Leonean artists and entertainers.

Emmerson Bockarie who will be performing in the United Kingdom on the same day of the awards is arguably one of the most popular artists in recent times.  The ‘Bobor Bele’ star who will be receiving the Presidential Medal Award-Gold has performed to sold out shows in and outside Sierra Leone.  A citation for his awards reads: “In recognition of his distinguished and exemplary performance in the field of Music.”

Prince Kuti-George aka Innocent, who has been a strong voice for the ruling All Peoples Congress in music, is also scheduled to receive the coveted award.  A citation for his Presidential Medal Award-Gold reads: “In recognition of his outstanding performance and devotion in the field of Music.”

Their female counterparts also struck some surprises.

Wilhemina John  aka Willie Jay, will also receive the Presidential Medal Award-Silver “In recognition of her outstanding performance in Music.”

Gospel notable artist Milicent Rhodes would be receiving the Presidential Silver Award “In recognition of outstanding performance in Music,” according to the citation.

Combine Artists and Wan Pot Comedians would be receiving the Presidential award-Gold.  A citation reads: “In recognition of their outstanding contribution to the nation especially in the field of Drama and Comedy.”

Kelvin Doe, the Sierra Leonean teenager who recently stunned the world after he created a small generator from the dustbin will also receive the Presidential Medal-Gold. A citation for Doe’s award reads: “In recognition of his outstanding accomplishment in innovative technology.”

Football legend, Mohamed Kallon, will also receive the Member of the Order Of  Rokel (MOR) ‘In recognition of his outstanding performance and contribution in the field of sports particularly as Captain of the Leone Stars,” the citation reads.
He has joined the Godfather of Sierra Leone contemporary music industry, Jimmy Bangura, to receive the country’s highest honor.
