Election Petition in Sierra Leone …SLPP Lawyer Apologizes

In the midst of a jam-packed Supreme Court yesterday 17 April, 2013 the country’s main opposition Sierra Leone People;s Party (SLPP), represented by celebrated legal luminary Dr. Bu-Buakei Jabbie (in photo), apologized for an irregular and improper filing of a motion of locus standi before the honorable court. “I do regret and therefore humbly apologize to the court”, Dr. Jabbie said.

Chief Justice Umu Hawa Timbo requested the court registrar, Mr. Prince Rose to explain to the court why he was handing over documents tendered by the plaintiff during court proceeding instead of earlier as is the procedure.

The Registrar pointed that at the time that  SLPP came in to file the motion, the sub-treasury was closed and so the party was not able to pay the regulatory fee, neither did they properly file the document to be presented in court.

It could be recalled that the SLPP had earlier filed a petition against the validity of the past November 17th 2012 presidential election result issued by the National Electoral Commission (NEC). The ruling All People Congress (APC)  in return filed an opposition  against the SLPP,  demanding that the petition in question be struck out of the supreme court on the grounds that it was out of time and marred by other irregularities.

The motion will be ruled on today.
