A disappointing weekend by service providers

I thought it was just my ill luck; from last Friday afternoon I began to experience difficulties in accessing the internet; sometimes after several frustrating attempts I would get as far as being told that “This page is not available.” By Sunday evening, I thought my Laptop was on performance strike, because it was more than just a go-slow and so I walked down all the way to one of the internet cafes that appear to be open all the time. I was advised to wait as there were then no signals from the internet; after hanging around for an hour or so I was advised to give up and I returned home disappointed. Ah, but the hour went very quickly because I struck up conversation with a young lady, a student at IPAM who was very charming and easy to talk with. There was no improvement with my computer up to 11 o’clock on Monday morning and I sent the modem to Zain to confirm that I still had credit for the rest of January. By the time he returned from Rawdon Street, or it Siaka Stevens Street , I could never remember which one has the Zain entrance, I read Bee’s frustration in standard times with our service providers. I am aware that things can and do go wrong even with the most modern contraptions and inventions, but could not our service providers notify us on their mobile networks that “normal Service will resume as soon as possible,” as they do with their promotion gimmicks? The internet service continues to be erratic.

Readers may recall my comments in the Monday edition on President Koroma’s planned visit to Kailahun district and how I hoped he would take in a few places in addition to the district headquarter town of Kailahun . I received a call from the Chief Administrator of the district council that he had been directed by the chairman of the council to issue invitations to all prominent persons from the district who were residing outside to participate in the event. I was therefore amused to receive yet another call from Kailahun enquiring whether it was true that it was a recent political crossover who had invited his Excellency to Luawa chiefdom. I assured my caller that the President had planned his visit long before Mr. Opportunist thought of crossing over to the ruling party. The incident reminds me of the days of President Siaka Stevens. There was a funny character in Kono who had spent years in Britain only to finally return home just as he had gone, with no achievement to his credit. I was present on quite a few occasions when President Stevens would issue instructions to prevent him from entering the Presidential guesthouse. However, our man was never daunted by the snub; he would wait as the President vehicle was moving and he would move quickly and whisper whatever to him. If he was in luck and the President moved his head, he would later exploit that gesture to whomsoever he had lied that his Excellency had acceded to his request or problem. As expected he always collected a handsome reward from his gullible victims. Likewise in Kailahun, our man is already taxing his supporters to contribute towards cost of his entertaining his Excellency. As chairman Nyuma has said in his interview in the Concord Times newspaper, President Koroma will be visiting Kailahun district as head of state and that is how most of us will receive him irrespective of our party affiliations and no one is going to deny us that.
