Secretary General of the Saudi-based Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has on behalf of his organization congratulated the President of Sierra Leone, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma on the occasion of his re-election.

In a press statement issued last night, Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu (in photo) expressed the hope that “this historical event would further give President Koroma the opportunity to lead his people towards greater prosperity, democracy, stability and development.”

The Secretary General also appealed to other candidates and their supporters to “accept the results and to only resort to constitutional means, in case of any electoral dispute.”

The Secretary General also reiterated the determination of the OIC to continue to support Sierra Leone in its peace building efforts.

Earlier, the OIC joined other international organizations across the world to express its satisfaction with the overall conduct of the just concluded elections in Sierra Leone, describing them as “free, fair and credible.”

In another press statement issued a day after the polls, H.E Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, extended his congratulations to Sierra Leoneans for “showing their keenness to foster national unity and interest in the protection of democracy in Sierra Leone.”

The Turkish-born diplomat also expressed his appreciation to the authorities for their “organized approach in conducting the elections.”

It would be recalled that the OIC General Secretariat took part in the monitoring of the just concluded Presidential, Parliamentary, and District Council elections.

The OIC is the second largest inter-governmental organization after the United Nations which has membership of 57 states spread over four continents. And Sierra Leone became a member in 1971.
