Teachers Damn SLTU

It is an unchallenged fact that the Sierra Leone Teachers Union SLTU is one of the richest and most academic unions in Sierra Leone but many teachers contributing monthly to the union have started questioning the necessity of its very existence.  (Photo: National President of Sierra Leone Teachers Union)

In a recent interview with Sierra Express, a group of apparently disgruntled and concerned teachers accused the union of doing little to better their lot despite the fabulous sum of money it collects from them every blessed month.

“When a teacher dies, the SLTU will not intervene until that corpse is embarrassed”, they alleged, blaming the situation on the high level of centralization and bureaucracy that keeps plaguing the union.

The concerned teachers informed this reporter that it takes quite a long time for the union to respond to emergencies as the constituent executives are not operating a serious budget that can enable them to timely respond to the plight of teachers.

“Medical and legal services are not available to most teachers”, they charged, adding  that the hotel 5:10 is so expensive that only well-to-do teachers can afford to spend a night there while poor teachers are left with no alternative but to reside with relatives and friends whenever they visit Freetown.

The aggrieved teachers described the SLTU complex at Kortugbumma in Bo as so small that it cannot host all the teachers in Bo District although an unimaginable sum of money is said to have been expended to construct it.

“Seldom do we see or hear the union training the thousands of untrained and unqualified teachers in this nation”, they observed, wondering what the union is doing with the huge amount of union dues collected every month.

“Is it just to build an undersized complex after several years?” they asked.

The concerned teachers also noted that thousands of their colleagues in this nation have been going without salaries for several years and the union is doing little or nothing to solve their problem, even though the union championed the cause of democracy in this country for nine months.

The SLTU National Executive Council is yet to respond to the teachers concerns.
