ATLANTA — The Carter Center is sending observers to launch an international election observation mission for general elections in Sierra Leone.

The eight long-term observers were deployed Monday at the invitation of Sierra Leone’s National Elections Commission. The country’s general election is set for Nov. 17.

The observers and Freetown-based core team represent eight countries. They attended three days of briefings in Freetown before leaving for the four regions of Sierra Leone.

The Atlanta-based center’s observers plan to meet regularly with representatives of the elections commission, political parties, independent candidates, civil society organizations, the international community, and domestic election observers to assess electoral preparations and the pre-electoral environment throughout the country.

They will also monitor the activities of the election administration, campaigning, voter education, and other election-related issues.
