President Koroma Addresses Tribal Authorities on the Cholera outbreak

Freetown: His Excellency Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma has called on tribal authorities in the Western Area to join hands with government and development partners in the fight against the cholera outbreak in Sierra Leone. He made this call during a meeting held with the traditional leaders at State House.

Speaking during the meeting, President Koroma registered government’s profound appreciation to the chiefs for their swift response to the epidemic in the country, saying, “Government is happy about your immediate reactions to the outburst of the disease as we cannot afford to let our people die of cholera”.

The Head of State informed the tribal authorities that the Sierra Leone Red Cross and other humanitarian organizations have intervened in a big way, and therefore urged the community and public opinion leaders to be fully involved in the battle against the cholera outbreak in order to save lives.

“We have rebuilt the health sector but that does not mean that is the end of health problems in the country”, he said, and implored tribal authorities to further engage their various communities with control and preventives messages, as well as sanitized behavioral attitudes towards the illness and personal hygiene generally.

The State House Chief of Staff, Dr Kaifala Marrah re-echoed the call on every citizen to play a role in the fight against the disease.

Dr. Kaifala Marrah said that the meeting was conveyed to inform tribal authorities about efforts that have been made by government and development partners in the eradication of the cholera outburst in the country.

He noted that everybody should join hands with government to ensure that the spread of the disease come to an immediate pass, and commended development partners for their efforts in the entire campaign.

The State House Chief of Staff encouraged the tribal authorities to make good use of water purification drugs such as chlorine and others provided by the government.

Health Advisor in the Strategy and Policy Unit in the Office of the President, Miatta Kargbo, described the outbreak as a real epidemic, and warned that people should take it seriously.

She revealed that the Ministry of Health and Sanitation and development partners are working in close collaboration to bring an immediate end to the illness.

Led by the Acting Mayor of the Freetown City Council, Councilor Gibril Kanu, the tribal authorities pledged their full commitment towards sensitizing their various communities in the Western Area as a move in the right direction to fight the cholera outbreak in the country.
