Parliament happy over operations of Socfin Agricultural Company

The Oversight committee chairman, Hon Ibraihim Sorie, Deputy Chairman, Hon. Alimamy G. Kargo and other members of the committee visited the company’s operational site and discovered that the company was working in line with the president’s aspiration on food security.

In his remarks, Hon. Ibrahim Sorie explained that as part of their parliamentary oversight functions, their business is to monitor the operations of all agriculture institutions in the country to find out the achievements and challenges these institutions faced in their work.

On his part, the Country Manager of SOCFIN Agricultural Company, Mr. Gerben Haringsma thanked the MPs for their visit, saying the company has provided two thousand jobs for the community members in that part of the country and that they have a lease agreement with government of 6,500 hectres of land, 3,500 of which the company would use to grow palm oil seeds.

He informed the visiting MPs that his company has the largest nursery site in Africa for palm kennel oil with over 650,000 seeding.

The Country Manager further informed visitors that they are complying with their cooperate social responsibility  by providing scholarships for students, the constructions of feeder roads including  bridges, building  hospitals and providing ambulance for the community.

The Paramount Chief of Malen Chiefdom, former Member of Parliament, Hon. PC Kebbie, dilated on the benefits his people have derived from SOCFIN in the agriculture projects.

Pujehun District Council Chairman, Mr Sadiq Sillah lauded the operations of the company and assured that council will continue to support in promoting agriculture in the country.

The committee also visited the offices of Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in Pujehun, Kenema and Moyamba agricultural centers where committees observed that agriculture was  moving in the right direction.
