Anfield Awaits for Sierra Leone Starlets

Two of Sierra Leone’s brightest footballing prospects are preparing themselves to take the field for one of the world’s most famous and successful football clubs.  (Picture: Mustapha Bundu, left, and Sulaiman Samura, right)

In less than 2 weeks, Mustapha Bundu and Sulaiman Samura, both of whom are students in the Craig Bellamy Foundation Academy, will travel to the UK to spend 1-month training and playing with the Liverpool FC Academy.

A sign of the Craig Bellamy Foundation’s continued commitment to offering their student’s the best opportunities available, this 4-week Training Placement with one of the world’s footballing power-houses comes only a year after a similar venture with Cardiff City FC.

Upon arriving in England the two players will enter into a full-time training programme at Liverpool’s Academy – the same Academy that has produced international greats such as Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen and Jamie Carragher.

During their time with Liverpool, the players will compete in several top-level Academy fixtures, where they will be given the opportunity to showcase their talent, as well as learn from their new team-mates and coaches.

News of this latest development within Sierra Leonean football should come as a welcome boost to the SLFA, as both boys – born in 1997 – are the correct age for the upcoming CAF U-17 qualifiers, where Sierra Leone will meet Senegal in October 2012. One can only assume that a successful spell at one of the leading football academies in the world would go a long way to ensuring that these two young hopefuls will be pulling on their countries colours later this year.
