IG Munu Testifies in HRC Probe

Inspector General of the Sierra Leone Police Force (SLP) Francis Allieu Munu, has testified in an open court, set-up by the Human Rights Commission, over allegations of flagrant abuse of people’s rights in a protest action stage-managed by workers of the African Mineral Limited (AML) some two months ago.

According to the communications officer, of the Human Rights Commission, Henry Mustapha Sheku, he said the probe commenced on the 16th July, at the Bubuna Town, Court Baray Tonkolili District.

He said owing to the conflicting reports that members of the Sierra Leone Police Force (SLP) were involved in highhanded activities which constituted serious violations of people’s fundamental rights in the April industrial strike action between the police and AML workers, the Inspector General of police denied such claims saying the media out blown the entire showdown.

The IG said the protesters went wild with their action with little regard for law and order. He said to see that these irate youths do not create unnecessary security risks, his institution acted on its mandate to save life and property of people and that of the African Minerals company’s from being destroyed.
