RSLAF Gets New Boss

The Minister of Defence Retired Major Palo Conteh has promoted Brigadier General Samuel O. Williams (in photo) to Major General and appointed him as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces.

Speaking to members of the RSLAF at the Ministry of Defence, Tower Hill, he said the appointment of the new CDS was made due to the long protracted illness of the former Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Robert Yira Koroma, who has been lying on his sick bed for the last seven months.

In his exact words the Minister said “the medical team has reported that he is no longer fit to serve in the military service due to his health condition.” Rtd Major Alfred Palo Conteh maintained that because of this situation the appointment of the new CDS was necessary.

Mr. Palo said the decision to appoint Brigadier Samuel .O. Williams who was the substantive Deputy Chief of Defence Staff and acting CDS Staff rest exclusively with the approval of H.E. the president.

The Rtd Major informed members of the press and the RSLAF that Brigadier General Mohamed Allie Sesay who is the current Commander Joint forces has now been appointed as Deputy Chief of Defence Staff and Colonel John .E. Milton who is the current Commander for the infantry brigade in Makeni has been move from that appointment to the position of Commander Joint Forces and also being promoted to the rank of Brigadier General.

However he went on to say that the appointment of the Chief of Defence Staff in the military is subject to the approval of parliament and that all other appointments remain exclusively for parliamentary approval.

The minister state further that the appointment of officers to ranking positions is based on their level of performance and that every decision taken is not base upon the phraseology of politics but on the interest of the republic.
