American citizen damns Sierra Leone’s education
David Odum–Nwanze, an American national has damned Sierra Leone’s degree of dropout in the education sector following his falling out with authorities at the College of Medicine and Allied Health Science (COMAHS) over admission and lodging.
He told Sierra Express Media in an interview that he is disappointed over the degree of corruption that grips the country’s education sector pointing to the College of Medicine and Allied Science University of Sierra Leone which he said is a national disgrace. He said he decided to pursue his Masters studies at the COMAHS upon realizing that his father hails from Sierra Leone coupled with the PR beauty of the college on the web. Thwarting to say, he said, “the beauty of PR stuff I saw on the internet about the quality of education the college professes to offer is different from what I came to learn”.
David Odum–Nwanze said he was enrolled at the college in December 16th of 2010 and he was admitted as a 5th year student offering courses in medicines for the Academic year 2010-2011.
“As a foreign student I was asked to pay the sum of $7,150.” He said despite having got a letter to apportion him an apartment at No. 10A Kingharman Road, Freetown for the sum of $200 per month, a Lecturer by the name of Miss Kamanda came to occupy his flat since April 6th and stayed until May 19th before she would leave.
“The school authorities insist in taking sides with the lecturer”, he said, “because I’m a foreigner and she is a Sierra Leone staff.”
On May 11th of this year, the Deputy Registrar, IA Conteh wrote to David that he is no longer a student of COMAHS and that he should no longer continue to occupy the said No 10 Kingharman quarters as according to him it was reserved for staff members.
Meanwhile the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has intervened by asking the college authorities to refund David’s monies. Both legal parties of the college and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are looking into the issue, stated the Deputy Registrar.
