Perm. Sec. Blames Navy for Security Lapses

Sandi, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Marine Resources has blamed in no uncertain terms the Sierra Leone Navy for what he describes as their security lapses resulting in poachers having a field day illegally fishing in the country’s territorial waters. Mr. Paul Sandi made this statement while answering questions posed by Sierra Express Media yesterday, Tuesday 29th.

The civil servant, breaking his silence as defined by regulations pointed accusing fingers at the Navy, the branch of the Sierra Leone Armed Force that he said is responsible for security at our sea waters, but has not been owning up to its responsibilities.

“The illegal fishing in our waters by foreigners is as a result of the weakness of security officers guarding the waters,” the civil servant asserted angrily.

Sandi made these statements in reaction to recent accusations that officials in the Marine Ministry are conniving with foreign owned fishing vessels to take part in illegal operations.

On the issue of the recent matter in which some Korean nationals were caught illegally fishing in our territorial waters, Mr. Sandi said the matter is purely between the security and the judiciary.

He said our democratic state is purely based on separation of powers and that the ministry as part of the executive has no role to play in any matter that is between the courts or with security aspects.
