Airport Authority levies $24 passenger airport tax

The Ministry of Transport and Aviation in collaboration with the security company, Westminster Aviation Security Service have both slammed a $24 dollar Airport-tax on travelers using the international airport gateway in Lungi which took effect on Monday May 21.

This tax is considered as exorbitant in the history of aviation in Sierra Leone. It was abruptly made according to views of some passengers, and it outlives the previous $5 Airport-tax.

Responding to such reaction, the Airport Management said the increment is part of a standard procedure aimed at enforcing quality and maximum security presence at the Lungi International Airport.

The SLAA management argues that the introduction of the new tax works in connection to keep trend with modern security facilities that would upgrade the safety caution of the Airport and its environs.

The management said proceeds accrued out of the tax are going to be used to upkeep services of the new sniper  dogs (police dogs) and the modern facility apparatus at the Airport. The challenge of management is to avoid the re-occurrence of the 2007 cocaine saga and other illicit trafficking which has the tendency to paint the country’s image negative.

Meanwhile, the new Airport security procedures have slammed a ban on all workers to avoid the premises of the Airport perimeter when not on duty except otherwise tending to issues of importance concerning management of the Airport authority.
